hiking network from Deventer to Holten
From the center of medieval Deventer you walk through the 19th century suburbs via green shortcuts to the outskirts of Deventer. The suburbs are the first neighborhoods built around the center after the expansion of the city after the repeal of the Fortress Act in 1874. Until then, this law regulated the defense of the Netherlands against enemy attacks.
In suburb East is also located the widely acclaimed soccer stadium of Go Ahead Eagles the Adelaarshorst due to its English character and therefor unique in The Netherlands.
After leaving the suburbs of Deventer, you will be hiking straight into the agricultural area of the Salland region east of Deventer. From here, the landscape opens up with beautiful, intimate moment corners and shortcuts. After passing through the woods around Lettele and in what is called the coulisse landscape near Dijkerhoek. With a coulisse landscape we try to express the setting of high trees with lanes, hedges, meadows and forests that give the impression that new curtains are raised all the time. Hiking takes us then through the agricultural area between Dijkerhoek and Holten to the village of Holten itself.
Holten has much to offer; a cozy village center, plenty of choice of restaurants and cafes and good shopping facilities. Holten lies at the foot of National Park “The Sallandse Heuvelrug” which hills were formed during the penultimate ice age.
The distance of the walk from Deventer to Holten depends on your starting point: Deventer center or Deventer station Colmschate if you decide to shorten the first part by bus or train.
